Rob Bell and the Afterlife

Don't get excited! We're not going to weigh in on the doctrine being discussed in the Church of late (though we always feel that if Christ-like love and respect are displayed, it's good for the Church to face the big issues).

The events that are resonating among Christians right now have brought something to mind that we think is worth saying. We have to admit that we know very little of the afterlife--that's what makes it afterlife, after all. But for those of us who live to share God's love with a world in need, it's worth considering the case we present. Many of us take solace in the Bible's promises of rewards in Heaven, and rightly so: life, though sweet, is also full of struggles and challenges. When we tire, it's nice to know that Jesus is preparing a place for us in Heaven. Remembering how temporary our circumstances are can help us enjoy the good and weather the bad.

But we all have to admit that there are times when this side of existence feels very real, and the other side very not real. We rarely evangelize from this perspective, but isn't this the most likely viewpoint of those who are not yet Christians? Haven't we all experienced untold blessings in life simply because we know Christ? I believe that life is worth living with Christ even if the afterlife is not considered as part of the equation. It is--that is Truth--but the Christian faith is not a "suffer now, celebrate later" proposition. There are new blessings each morning, and when we walk in step with Christ the fruits of his promises are plainly evident on this side of eternity.

Indeed, Heaven is an exciting promise at the end of a life spent triumphing in Christ. But if we want to be more effective in sharing Christ with the world around us, we should start acknowledging the tangible benefits of a day-to-day walk with Him. People turn to Christ for many reasons, but often they seek comfort and peace in the midst of very real, "right now" circumstances. We are not without answers for those concerns, for He is ever present in our hearts, wherever we go. This is the promise He fulfills to us every moment of every day; there is no waiting for the benefits of relationship with Him!

Yes and Amen! I agree...my husband and I are actually reading Rob Bell's new book, Love Wins, right now to determine for ourselves whether we agree or disagree with his theology, but so far it is definitly making me evaluate why I believe what I believe...is it really Biblical or just doctrine from a religious upbringing?! Although, like you said...the bottom line is, does it really matter...as long as you understand that God is love and He has great things for you now, today as well as the future...He is in control and I trust him whether the"afterlife" is or is not what I expect it to be!
